Anderson Powers Past Emory & Henry in Season Opener

The Anderson University men's soccer team powered past Emory & Henry College with a 3-0 victory in Friday's season opener at the AU Soccer Fields.
 
"I'm happy to get things started on the right foot," Coach Scott Fridley said.
 
Anderson saw seven freshmen make their collegiate debuts.
 
"I was very pleased with our freshman class."
 
In addition to the freshmen, the Ravens returned eight seniors, which made a large impact.
 
"I was impressed with our seniors and their leadership throughout the game."
 
In the first minute, Derek Thorpe (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) put a strong shot on goal for the Ravens (1-0). Thorpe followed up by putting Anderson on the board in the 20th minute after rebounding a shot on goal from Daniel Collins (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone). Collins was credited with an assist.
 
Regan Frost (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) delivered a goal 31 minutes into the match to give Anderson a 2-0 lead.
 
Emory & Henry's best scoring opportunity came 53 minutes into the match. Zeke Workman deflected a pass while positioned in front of the goal, but the shot went high.
 
During the 75th minute of the match, Nick Martin (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) fired a rocket from about 30 yards out for a goal. Sam Rowlison (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) provided the assist.
 
The Ravens outshot the Wasps 24-9. Anderson's defense prevented Emory & henry for taking a shot on goal during the match. The Ravens registered 10 shots on goal.
 
Thorpe contributed four shots on goal, while Race Williams (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian), Sean Cain (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe), Martin, Collins, Frost and Malik Gayler (New Market, Ind./Southmont) put shots on target. Martin and Drew Sonnefeldt (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) each led the team with two steals. Grant Conklin (Lewisburg, Ohio/Troy Christian) intercepted a team-high five passes. Cain also provided five corner kicks.
 
Jackson Etheridge (Finneytown, Ohio/St. Xavier) and Caleb Oliver (Marion, Ind./Marion) combined for a shutout for Anderson. Oliver started the first 81 minutes, 28 seconds while Etheridge came in for the remaining 8:32.
 
Emory & Henry's Morgan Moser saved seven of the 10 shots he faced.
 
Anderson and Trine University (1-0) battle for first place in the Raven/Quaker Classic on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the AU Soccer Fields.
