Women's Basketball Secures Comeback Victory against Rose-Hulman in HCAC Quarterfinals
The third-seeded Anderson University women's basketball team secured a 75-68 comeback victory against sixth-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology during the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Anderson (17-9) opened with a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, which included six points from Bella Larrison. The Fightin' Engineers (9-17) recorded a 13-3 run to close the first quarter with a 17-13 lead.
Rose-Hulman held a steady lead for the first half of the second quarter. Leading the Ravens 24-22, the Fightin' Engineers recorded a 7-0 surge to increase the margin to nine. Paige Williamson knocked down a key 3-pointer with 2:03 left in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 33-30. Anderson cut the lead to two before Rose-Hulman pulled ahead to a 38-32 lead at halftime.
Anderson cut the lead to 41-38 with 7:16 left in the third quarter. The Fightin' Engineers responded with another 7-0 run to take a 48-38 lead with 5:17 left in the third quarter, Rose-Hulman's biggest lead of the day. Anderson followed up Rose-Hulman's run with an 8-0 run of its own, cutting the lead to two. Rose-Hulman closed the third quarter with a 53-51 lead.
Izzy Davis made a layup with 8:26 remaining to even the score at 55-all. Larrison and Sophia Reese traded baskets. Davis put Anderson up 59-57 before Rose-Hulman's Katelyn Fennell responded with a 3-pointer to take a 60-59 lead. After Victoria Detraz hit two free throws, Fennell drained another 3-pointer. Maria Godoy Rodriguez added a basket to give Rose-Hulman a 65-61 lead. After Larrison cut the lead to two, Emma Schipp knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Fightin' Engineers a 68-63 lead with 2:52 to go.
Sydney Sierota made a layup to cut the lead to three with 2:36 remaining. The two teams traded possessions twice. Sierota then came up with a steal and took it back for a layup to cut the lead to one. After getting a stop, the Ravens possession went down to seven seconds on the shot clock before Coach Jon Gin called a timeout with 39.6 seconds remaining. On the inbound pass, Detraz received the pass down low and was fouled on the shot. She hit both of her free throws to take a 69-68 lead with 37.5 seconds left. The Ravens continued to get stops and hit their free throws down the stretch. Anderson closed the game on a 12-0 run, which included an 8-for-8 shooting clip from the charity stripe.
"I'm thankful for a very gritty win by our team," Coach Jon Gin said. It wasn't pretty. We had a lot of nervous energy to start the game, but we settled in nicely after halftime. Our seniors really led the way and kept us calm and focused down the stretch. They made some huge plays defensively that sparked enough offense to win the game. We executed really well down the stretch on both ends of the floor and hit some clutch free throws."
Anderson drained 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) shots from the free-throw line while Rose-Hulman hit each of its seven attempts from the charity stripe. The Ravens converted 26-of-71 (36.6 percent) shots from the field while the Fightin' Engineers made 36-of-72 (36.1 percent) attempts from the floor. Anderson outrebounded Rose-Hulman 50-42. The Ravens held a 20-15 advantage on the offensive boards and outscored the Fightin' Engineers 15-13 on second-chance points. Rose-Hulman committed 15 turnovers while Anderson turned the ball over 12 times. The Ravens held a 14-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Rose-Hulman knocked down 9-of-25 (36 percent) shots from 3-point range while Anderson hit 4-of-20 (20 percent) attempts from the perimeter.
Detraz led the Ravens with 19 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks. Larrison provided 17 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and one block. Davis turned in 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sierota contributed 12 points, six assists, and three steals. Williamson tallied eight points, Lauren Smith scored four points and Ashley Pate rounded out the Anderson scoring effort with two points.
Schipp paced the Fightin' Engineers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Fennell and C.K. Gallegos Rodriguez each produced 12 points. Kaia Peterson came up with three steals.
Anderson clashes with second-seeded Franklin College (20-6) in the HCAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.

Men's Basketball Advances Past Bluffton to HCAC Tournament Semifinals
The second-seeded Anderson University men's basketball team advanced past seventh-seeded Bluffton University 103-89 during Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday in O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.
Anderson (17-9) is set to face off with third-seeded Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (17-9) in the HCAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.
The Ravens led Bluffton (9-17) by a score of 57-41 entering halftime. Bluffton outscored Anderson 48-46 in the second half. Anderson held a 75-46 lead with 15 minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the half.
"I was pleased with how we played in the beginning of the game, building the lead that we established early in the second half, but we sure don't do a very good job of closing games out," Coach Carter Collins said. "Our energy dips significantly any time we think that we have a game in hand, and we almost always allow the other team to get back in the thick of it. I'm not sure what the solution is - I think it's something that the players are going to have to figure out. Regardless, we're pleased to advance to the semifinals next weekend, and we know that we will face tough competition down in Kentucky."
Anderson converted 37-of-70 (52.9 percent) shots from the field while Bluffton hit 29-of-64 (45.3 percent) attempts from the floor. The two teams put up matching 3-point shooting percentages of 41.7 percent. Anderson knocked down 15-of-36 attempts from 3-point range while Bluffton made 10-of-24 shots from the perimeter.
Nolan Swan provided 22 points and five assists. Bryce Williams dropped 20 points and drained 4-of-5 (80 percent) shots from behind the arc. Elijah Mattingly recorded a near triple-double with 16 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. DeMonte Ferguson tallied 18 points and two steals. Kenney Troutman turned in 12 points and two steals. Will Jamison scored 11 points. Cedric Anderson contributed two points and six rebounds while Rob Davidson rounded out the Anderson scoring effort with two points.

Capital Edges Women's Tennis
Capital University (5-4) edged the Anderson University women's tennis team (2-6) by a score of 4-3 on Saturday at the Community Sport & Wellness Center in Pendleton. Anderson secured the doubles point as Abby Cunningham/Kate Oberle won the No. 2 doubles match and Ella Maiden/Gabby Hosier won the No. 3 doubles match. In singles, Hosier earned a win at No. 3 singles and Cunningham took the win at No. 4 singles. Isabella Patterson also claimed a pair of single-set exhibition wins. Anderson opens the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) season by hosting Berea College (0-0, 0-0) on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Community Sport & Wellness Center.

Alma Wins Series against Baseball
Alma College (4-0-1) took a three-game series against the Anderson University baseball team (1-4-1) with two wins and a tie at Don Brandon Field.
The Scots fought to a 15-9 victory on Friday. In Game 1 on Saturday, Alma secured an 18-1 win. Game 2 on Saturday went 10 innings and settled for a 4-4 tie before being called to due darkness.
On Friday, Russell Weaver smashed a three-run home run. Zac Stawski blasted a two-run homer. Dylan Hogan ripped a two-run double. Zayden Stiller and Jon Dorsch each went 2-for-4. Daniel Barreca stole two bases. Leo McEnulty suffered the loss.
In Game 1 on Saturday, Ben Brown contributed a solo homer and Hogan added a double. Braden Richey was hit with the loss. In Game 2 on Saturday, Lance Coy threw three scoreless innings. The Greensburg native struck out two batters, issued two walks and allowed two hits. Hogan went 3-for-5 with a double. Will Loftus finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Griffin Wolf went 2-for-5 with a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brown finished 2-for-4.

Men's Track & Field Places Seventh in The Last Roar
The Anderson University men's track and field team placed seventh in The Last Roar on Saturday in Cincinnati. Qi'Yam Simmons locked up second in the shot put with a personal-record (PR) distance of 14.71 meters (48 feet, 3.25 inches). The sophomore Indianapolis Arsental Tech graduate also took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.71 meters (48 feet, 3.25 inches). Hunter Isaacs claimed third in the pole vault, clearing a PR height of 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3.5 inches). Garrett Isaacs cleared the pole vaults bar at a PR height 11.41 meters (37 feet, 5.25 inches). Kyle Corbin clocked times of 2 minutes, 13.95 seconds in the 800-meter run and 4:46.40 in the 1 mile, setting PR's in both events. Zaire Prioleau turned in PR's in both the 60-meter dash (7.70) and the high jump (1.75 meters; 5 feet, 8.75 inches). Anderson battles in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. in Cincinnati.
Women's Track & Field Finishes Seventh in The Last Roar
The Anderson University women's track and field team finished seventh place in The Last Roar on Saturday in Cincinnati. Naomi Hoover captured third place in the 400-meter dash with a personal-record (PR) time of 1 minute, 4.76 seconds. The freshman from Columbus, Ohio raced to fourth in the 200 with a PR of 29.10 seconds. Lai'Lonie Waller-Thomas earned fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.30 meters (46 feet, 11 inches). Peyton Bundy posted PR's in both the shot put (8.88 meters; 29 feet, 1.75 inches) and the weight throw (11.27 meters; 36 feet, 11.75 inches). Jenn Eisinger launched the weight throw a PR distance of 10.73 meters (35 feet, 2.5 inches). The Ravens battle in the HCAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. in Cincinnati.
Kalamazoo Shuts Out Men's Tennis
Kalamazoo College (2-2) shut out the Anderson University men's tennis team (3-4) by a score of 7-0 at the Markin Tennis Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. Martin Suarez and Arturo Mendoza won their match at No. 1 doubles. Anderson opens the HCAC season by hosting Berea College (0-0, 0-0) on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Pendleton at the Community Sport & Wellness Center.
