Baseball Splits with Earlham
The Anderson University baseball team split with Earlham College during Sunday’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader at Don Brandon Field.
The Anderson University baseball team split with Earlham College during Sunday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader at Don Brandon Field.
Earlham (20-9, 13-2) topped the Ravens (18-13-1, 9-5) by a score of 7-4 in Game 1. The Ravens outlasted the Quakers 6-5 in Game 2.
GAME 1: EARLHAM 7, ANDERSON 4
During the bottom of the first inning, Trey Dorton contributed an RBI single. Jon Dorsch then smashed a two-run home run to put the Ravens ahead 3-0.
In the top of the second, Sean Jeffries singled in a run for Earlham. During the bottom half of the inning, Dorton scored on a wild pitch to put Anderson ahead 4-1.
Earlham plated five runs in the fourth. Dylan Rieck ripped an RBI double and Jeffries singled in a run. Jonathan Jimenez delivered a three-run blast to put Earlham ahead 6-4.
In the top of the seventh, Evan Duncan stole base and a throwing error on the same play allowed Duncan to score.
Earlham outhit Anderson 8-6. Dorsch blasted a two-run homer. Dorton contributed an RBI single. The Ravens received singles from Griffin Wolf, Dylan Hogan, Zayden Stiller and Russell Weaver to round out Anderson's six hits. Dorton also stole a base.
Jimenez smashed a three-run homer for the Quakers. Jeffries went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Rieck recorded a double. Jackson McFarland, Noah Wagster, Austin Dick and Chris Barnett each added singles to round out Earlham's eight hits. Wagster racked up four stolen bases while Jimenez and Duncan tallied two stolen bases apiece.
Cayman Huntsman (3-1) earned the win. He struck out seven batters, issued one walk and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in eight innings. Hayden Scalf picked up his second save of the season. He retired each of the three batters he faced.
Rhet Heckman (5-2) was tagged with the loss. He fanned seven batters, yielded two walks and surrendered six runs on seven hits in six innings. Joe Wilson punched out two batters, issued two walks and conceded an unearned run on one hit in two innings. C.J. Williams retired each of the three batters he faced.
GAME 2: ANDERSON 6, EARLHAM 5
Dorsch delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to put Anderson ahead 2-0.
Jimenez singled in a run for the Quakers in the third. In the bottom half of the inning, Dorton knocked in Daniel Barreca on a sacrifice fly to give the Ravens a 3-1 lead.
Anderson added two more runs in the fifth. Dorton belted an RBI triple and Wolf singled in a run.
Wagster provided an RBI single in the sixth to trim the deficit to three.
During the eighth, Rieck singled in a run. Caelan Rogers scored on a passed ball. Jeffries then drove in Wagster to tie the game at 5-5. The Ravens escaped the jam as Barreca made a jumping catch at the fence.
Hogan smashed a solo homer in the eighth to give Anderson a 6-5 lead.
The Ravens retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the victory.
Anderson outhit Earlham 9-8. Dorsch went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and two RBI. Hogan blasted a solo homer. Dorton went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Barreca, Weaver and Ian Potts each contributed singles to round out Anderson's nine hits. Dorton and Barreca each stole bases.
Jimenez went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Rieck finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Barnett went 2-for-3 while Wagster and McFarland rounded out Earlham's eight hits with singles.
Kyan Miller (2-2) locked up the win for the Ravens after retiring each of the five batters he faced. Braden Richey struck out four batters, issued three walks and gave up two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Drew Doty fanned one batter, yielded three walks and conceded three runs on one hit in one-third of an inning.
Garret Odey (2-1) took the loss. He struck out one batter, issued zero walks and allowed one run on two hits in three innings. Lance Willoughby punched out two batters, yielded zero walks and scattered five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings.
