Simmons Named HCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year
The Anderson University men's track and field team claimed sixth place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Indoor Championships while the Anderson women's track and field team finished ninth during Saturday's meet in Cincinnati. Qi'yam Simmons was selected as an HCAC Men's Co-Newcomer of the Year.
Simmons locked up second in the shot put with a distance of 14.70 meters (48 feet, 2.75 inches) to garner second-team all-HCAC honors. He also placed eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.32 meters (46 feet, 11.75 inches).
On the men's side, Anderson's 4,000 distance medley relay team of Kyle Corbin, Ryan Krake, Caleb Savage and David Stansbury, which clocked a time of 11 minutes, 2.20 seconds to secure third and receive all-HCAC Honorable Mention. Kaleb Edridge raced to fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.84 seconds. Isaiah Buchanan took fourth in the shot put with a distance of 13.96 meters (45 feet, 9.75 inches). Hunter Isaacs cleared a height of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches) to secure fourth. On the women's side, Katie Ripberger captured fourth in the 60 hurdles with a finals time of 10.05 seconds.
Anderson battles in the Polar Bear Final Qualifier on Saturday, March 7 in Ada, Ohio.
Baseball Takes Two Games against Knox
The Anderson University baseball team (3-4-1) took two games in Saturday's doubleheader against Knox College (0-2) at Don Brandon Field.
Anderson secured a 4-3 victory in Game 1 in 12 innings as Trey Dorton delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly. The Ravens then rolled past Knox 10-0 in eight innings in Game 2.
In Game 1, Rhet Heckman struck out four batters, issued two walks and allowed one run on two hits in seven innings. C.J. Williams (1-0) earned the win. He yielded three walks in two hitless scoreless innings. Daniel Barreca went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases. Kyan Miller recorded one and two-thirds scoreless innings and Drew Doty threw a scoreless inning. The Ravens outhit the Prairie Fire 6-4.
In Game 2, Braden Richey (1-1) picked up the win. He fanned seven batters, issued three walks and gave up zero runs on four hits in six innings. Carter Knoblauch pitched a scoreless inning in his return from Tommy John surgery. Eli Ketterer also tossed a scoreless inning. Dylan Hogan went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Griffin Wolf finished 2-for-5 with a homer, a double and two RBI. Dorton went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Russell Weaver finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Will Loftus went 2-for-5 and Ian Potts drew three walks. Anderson outhit Knox 14-5.
Anderson and Knox close out the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Transylvania Battles Past Men's Basketball in HCAC Championship
Top-seeded Transylvania University battled past the second-seeded Anderson University men's basketball team by a score of 91-79 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament Championship on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.
Transylvania (20-8) drained 35-of-61 (57.4 percent) shots from the field while Anderson (18-10) hit 28-of-68 (41.2 percent) attempts from the floor. Transylvania committed 14 turnovers while Anderson turned the ball over 12 times. Despite finishing minus two in turnover margin, Transylvania outscored Anderson 20-8 off turnovers. The Pioneers also held an 11-4 advantage in fast-break points.
Nolan Swan notched 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. Rob Davidson contributed 15 points, six rebounds and knocked down each of his six shot attempts from the floor. Bryce Williams provided 15 points and Kenney Troutman scored 14 points. Elijah Mattingly notched seven points, seven rebounds and four assists. DeMonte Ferguson turned in six points and one block.
Anderson is graduating Jalen Bullock, Ferguson, Axel Laby, Mattingly and Troutman. During the last four years, the Ravens have earned a share of the last four HCAC regular-season titles (including two outright titles) and captured two HCAC Tournament titles.
"[Saturday] wasn't the end to our season that we wanted, but we sure have a lot to be proud of this year," Coach Carter Collins said. "I ended up falling in love with this year's team and will have only fond memories of them in the future."

Earlham Grinds Out Win against Women's Tennis
Earlham College (5-0, 1-0) grinded out a 4-3 victory against the Anderson University women's tennis team (3-7, 1-1) during Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchup at the Community Sport & Wellness Center in Pendleton. Ella Frantz and Paula Torrent secured a win at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Torrent took a win at No. 2 singles, Gabby Hosier earned a victory at No. 3 singles and Abby Cunningham claimed a win at No. 4 singles. Anderson's men's match with Earlham has been postponed until a future date. The Ravens' women's team battles Olivet Nazarene University (0-3) on March 9 at 9 a.m. at the Beerman Family Tennis Center in Lakeland, Fla.
