Men's Golf Captures Third in Polar Beaver Invitational
The Anderson University men's golf team captured third place in the two-day Polar Beaver Invitational, which concluded on Saturday in Bluffton, Ohio.
Anderson put together a 36-hole team score of 602 (+26), behind rounds of 298 and 304. Ohio Northern University's 'A' and 'B' teams tied for first with team scores of 590 (+14).
"Overall, it was a solid weekend for us, finishing third place." Coach Dijon Knight said. "We did a good job putting ourselves in contention after Round 1. We had three guys finish in the top 7, led by John Mercer with a strong top 5."
John Mercer tied for fifth with a 36-hole score of 147 (+3). The sophomore from Indianapolis fired rounds of 71 and 76 on the par-72 layout at Hidden Creek Golf Course. Mercer posted a new 18-hole relative-to-par personal record (PR) (-1) and tied his 36-hole relative-to-par PR.
"John was right in contention to win it late. It just came down to a couple of holes down the stretch."
Carter Wooddell tied for seventh with a 149 (+5) after carding rounds of 73 and 76. The freshman from Sydney, Ohio turned in a new 18-hole relative-to-par PR (+1) and tied his 36-hole relative-to-par PR. Luke LeBourdais also tied for seventh with a 149 (+5). The senior from Saginaw, Mich. recorded rounds of 74 and 75. Owen Mockabee tied for 31st with a 159 (+15) behind rounds of 79 and 80. Trent Nelson tied for 33rd with a 160 (+16) after shooting rounds of 82 and 78.
"I thought we competed well, but the difference for us was in the details. We had a few big numbers and missed opportunities, especially in Round 2, that kept us from making a real push at the top. There's a lot to build on with this group. We're getting consistent play from the top of the lineup and if we can clean up some of those mistakes, we'll put ourselves in a position to win soon."
Anderson battles in the two-day Timbergate Preview, beginning on Saturday, April 11 in Edinburgh at Timbergate Golf Course.
Track & Field Records 22 Top 5 Finishes in Huntsman Family Invitational
The Anderson University track and field team recorded 22 top 5 finishes during Saturday's Huntsman Family Invitational in Crawfordsville.
Anderson's men collected a pair of victories. Hunter Isaacs claimed the pole vault title with a clearance of 4.09 meters (13 feet, 5 inches), while Michael Sweigart captured first place in the hammer throw with a winning mark of 55.41 meters (181 feet, 9 inches). Sweigart also added a runner-up finish in the shot put at 14.82 meters (48 feet, 7.5 inches). Qi'yam Simmons placed second in the discus with a throw of 40.36 meters (132 feet, 5 inches) while also taking fourth overall and third in the college division in the shot put with a distance of 13.19 meters (43 feet, 3.25 inches)
Josiah Marshall posted a mark of 6.64 meters (21 feet, 9.5 inches) in the long jump to finish fourth overall and third in the college division. DaeQuan Viverette recorded personal-best performances in both the discus (37.78 meters; 123 feet, 11 inches) and hammer (33.77 meters; 110 feet, 9 inches).
On the track, the quartet of Myles Davis, Adam Dunson, Kaleb Eldridge and Josiah Marshall finished third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.73 seconds. The 4x400 relay team of Elijah Stires, Marshall, Caleb Savage and Dillon Pratt turned in a season-best time of 3:34.94. Johnnie Behrends clocked a personal-record (PR) time of 4:13.07 in the 1,500, while David Stansbury added a season-best mark of 4:20.73 in the 1,500 and Maxwell Cobb recorded a personal-best time of 4:55.04 in the 1,500.
On the women's side, Lai'Lonie Waller-Thomas led the Ravens, capturing first place in the discus with a mark of 32.03 meters (135 feet, 1 inch). She also earned second place overall and first in the college division in the shot put with a throw of 10.91 meters (35 feet, 9.5 inches). Peyton Bundy secured third place overall and second in the college division in the discus with a distance of 26.79 meters (87 feet, 11 inches).
Katie Ripberger raced to a season-best time of 17.02 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, which currently ranks fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC). Makayla Corn added a pair of personal-best performances in the sprints, clocking times of 15.61 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 33.66 seconds in the 200.
Anderson battles in the Indiana D-III Championships on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. in Greencastle.
Baseball Falls to Mount St. Joseph
The Anderson University baseball team (15-11-1, 6-4) fell to Mount St. Joseph University (8-14, 4-6) by a score of 12-6 during Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) matchup in Batavia, Ohio.
Anderson and Mount St. Joseph each finished the game with 13 hits. Zayden Stiller went 3-for-3 with a double while Daniel Barreca finished 3-for-5 with a double. Dylan Hogan smashed a solo home run. Griffin Wolf went 2-for-5 with a three-run double and Ian Potts finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Rex Richter (2-1) suffered the loss. Drew Doty tossed three innings of scoreless relief.
Anderson hosts Franklin College on Community Day in an HCAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11 at 12 p.m. at Don Brandon Field.
