Anderson University standout Halle Strege will battle in the 1-meter diving event during the NCAA Division III Central Region Diving Championships on Friday at 5:15 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
"Halle has made big improvements over the course of the season," Assistant Diving Coach Andra Pavich acknowledged. "We did a lot of work on cleaning up her dives and learning new dives in order to help her reach her goal of achieving a regional-qualifying score."
Strege punched her ticket to the diving regionals after eclipsing the 1-meter 11-dive NCAA 'B' qualifying standard of 395 points. The McCordsville native racked up a 1-meter 11-dive score of 402.95 points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championships to secure the first individual conference title in program history for either gender. Strege looks to improve her school record and personal best at the meet.
"My goal for regionals is to just break my personal record from conference," Strege said. "I'm super nervous for regionals, but I'm going to turn those nerves into the best dives I can possibly do to end my freshmen year with a bang!"
Strege was tabbed HCAC Diver of the Week three times this season. She won the 1-meter diving event in 7-of-9 duals, including 3-of-5 conference duals.
A single-dive raw score is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to calculate the overall score for the dive. Strege looks to utilize inward one-and-a-half somersault pike with a difficulty degree of 2.4 to rack up points.
"I am most excited to see her do her inward one and a half at Regionals," Pavich added. "It's also her favorite dive."
Twenty-two divers are scheduled to compete in the 1-meter diving event and the top four finishers will automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C. There will be a combined total of eight divers that make nationals between the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
