Spratley Named to All-HCLC Second Team as Ravens Wrap Up First Season
May 10, 2019
The Anderson University men's lacrosse program wrapped up its first season with Jacob Spratley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) receiving second-team all-Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) honors and Mike McManus (Maineville, Ohio/Loveland) earning HCLC all-sportsmanship recognition, which was announced by the conference on Thursday.
Anderson (1-12, 0-8) captured the first win in program history on March 13 after topping La Roche College (2-15) with an 11-10 victory in the final seconds.
"I'm incredibly proud of what was accomplished for this young squad this spring," Coach Jacob Ashton said. "We battled adversity in every contest, and to come away with our program's first win against all odds is an incredible feat! We constantly pushed our player's to not let the mentality of 'being a bunch of freshmen or being a brand-new program' keep us from finding success."
During the match, La Roche jumped out to an 8-3 in the third quarter, but Anderson rallied to even the match at 8-all after three quarters. Anderson managed to pull away from La Roche despite having only one player on the bench. The Ravens fought to earn the victory.
"The greatest thing about finding our sole win this season wasn't the fact we won a game, rather, our team learned what earning a win felt like. Not many young teams can fight back from a deficit with minimal substitutions; it took Heart, and sheer Will to push each other and not give up. I couldn't be prouder."
The Ravens put their development as a point of emphasis for their debut season.
"This season we focused on development. We had players from multiple backgrounds regarding their experience levels and abilities; simply put, we were never going to out play someone on talent alone. I'm excited about what the future holds for our team; we return 90 percent of the first-year squad and have a strong second recruiting class coming in. We lost a few tight games where we simply didn't have the depth to keep up, and I know we are going to be in a much better position for success this year."
Spratley was selected to the All-HCLC Second Team at the faceoff position. He won 96-of-228 (42.1 percent) faceoffs, which ranks second in the conference. Spratley collected 83 ground balls on the season and his average of 8.3 ground balls per game ranks second in the conference. He tallied 25 points on 17 goals and eight assists. Spratley also caused 13 turnovers.
"I'm excited for the success Jacob Spratley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) was able to find this season; he was asked to play multiple positions for this team, and to earn all-conference for his efforts is fantastic."
McManus totaled two points on a goal and an assist. The senior from Maineville, Ohio collected 37 ground balls and caused six turnovers.
