Knights Power Past Ravens with Strong First Quarter

Calvin College powered past the Anderson University men's lacrosse team with a 23-1 victory on Saturday at Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Knights (3-2) seized an 11-1 lead after the first quarter. In the first quarter, Calvin held an 11-2 advantage on faceoffs.
On the match, the Knights held a 24-4 advantage on faceoffs and outshot the Ravens (0-3) by a 70-6 margin. Calvin clear 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) attempts while Anderson finished 7-of-33 (21.2 percent) attempts on clears. The Knights won the battle of ground balls by a 73-20 margin.
"We didn't start well again and it showed," Coach Jacob Ashton said. "We struggled to win at the face off and couldn't clear the ball."
Jacob Spratley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East) netted the only goal for Anderson, while leading the team with three shots. Zach Cocuzzo (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) collected a team-high six ground balls. Tristan Wilbrandt (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral), Jonathan Orloff (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Caleb Spencer (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) each provided shots.
Max Foster lead Calvin scored five goals to lead Calvin while adding two assists to finish with seven points. Chase Sparling also put together seven points, producing three goals and four assists. Jacob Gandara recorded six points off three goals and three assists. Austin Bontreger found the back of the net four times. Nathan Jindra tallied five points off two goals and three assists. Noah Boelens turned in four points off three goals and an assist. Griffin Sparling turned in four points off a goal and three assists. Derrick Bittner also netted a goal for Calvin.
Chase Sparling won 23-of-26 (88.4 percent) and picked up 16 ground balls. Boelens picked up eight ground balls and Gandara finished with seven ground balls. Bontreger and Connor Wysong each caused three turnovers.
Cocuzzo saved 19 of the 42 shots he faced for Anderson.
"Zach had another stellar game in cage. He has shown true leadership and I am proud of his efforts."
Calvin's Kurtycz served the first half of the match in cage. He saw two shots and came up with one save. Evan Griffin came in at goalkeeper for the second half and faced zero shots.
Anderson clashes with La Roche College (1-6) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Macholtz Stadium.
"We have some young talent and it's frustrating because I know once our guys learn to believe in themselves and trust the process, we will be able to accomplish anything."
