Ravens Come Up Short in Program Debut

The Anderson University men's lacrosse team came up short as Earlham College secured a 9-5 victory during Wednesday's Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) matchup on Wednesday at Macholtz Stadium.
Anderson (0-1, 0-1) had no shortage of adversity to fight during the match. Limited by injuries, the Ravens were force to play with nine players for 7 minutes, 48 seconds during the second quarter and again for the final 13:48 of the match.
"I'm proud of our guys," Coach Jacob Ashton said. "We dealt with a lot of injuries and really weird situations. For us to play with a man down for the majority of the game and still be in the game is pretty incredible and I'm so proud of them for that."
Tristan Wilbrandt (Fishers, Ind./Cathedral) led the way for the Ravens with five points off three goals and two assists. The junior midfielder from Fishers collected a team-high 10 ground balls and won six faceoffs. Logan Lawrence (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) netted two goals. Gage Jones (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) tallied nine ground balls while Tre McCall (Morrow, Ga./Morrow) caused three turnovers and collected six ground balls.
Joel Dominguez and Blake Francis each delivered three goals apiece for Earlham (1-0, 1-0). Keith Coleman Jr. contributed five points off two goals and three assists. Logan Reihing netted a goal while Anthony Boutwell and Cole Burrell each dished out assists. Coleman Jr. and Kevin Ventura collected six faceoff wins apiece. Boutwell and Burrell both forced three turnovers.
Zach Cocuzzo (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek) served as Anderson's goalkeeper for 52:12 and saved 18 of the 25 shots he faced. Eric Fisher (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) represented Anderson as the goalkeeper for 7:48. He faced three shots and came up with one save.
Earlham goalkeeper Josh Perkins faced 17 shots and tallied 12 saves.
The Quakers started their second season with a men's lacrosse program. After finishing 0-14 a year earlier, Earlham picked up its first win in program history.
"Hats off to Earlham. Congrats to them and their coaches for getting their first win in program history."
The Quakers outshot the Ravens 52-30. Earlham also captured a 12-6 advantage on faceoffs.
Coleman Jr. put Earlham on the board after finding the back of the net during the fourth minute of the first quarter. Francis delivered a goal during the 12th minute of the first quarter.
During the second minute of the second quarter, Francis capitalized off a pass from Coleman Jr. for a goal. Dominguez provided a goal during the fourth minute of the second quarter to give the Quakers a four-score lead. Anderson scored its first goal six minutes into the second quarter after Lawrence finished a setup from Wilbrandt. Wilbrandt cut Earlham's lead to 4-2 with a score of his own eight minutes into the second quarter. Dominguez responded one minute later with a goal assisted by Burrell. Coleman Jr. contributed a goal with less than four minutes remaining in the half. The Quakers carried a 6-2 lead into halftime.

Anderson opened up the fourth quarter by cutting Earlham's lead to 7-4 as Lawrence capitalized off a pass from Wilbrandt during the opening minute of the period. Francis netted a goal assisted by Boutwell during the third minutes of the fourth quarter. Wilbrandt put the Ravens within three after scoring a man-up goal with less than nine minutes remaining in the match. Reihing finished a man-up scoring opportunity from Coleman Jr. with four minutes to go in the match.
"It's a great learning experience for myself and for our guys. We're learning how to win, which involves doing a lot of little things right."
Anderson hosts Heidelberg University (0-2) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Macholtz Stadium.
