Softball Splits Doubleheader with (RV) Transylvania

The Anderson University softball team split Sunday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader with Transylvania University at the Raven Softball Field.

Transylvania (17-5, 1-1) secured a 12-2 victory in five innings in Game 1. The Ravens (5-13, 1-1) then fought past the Pioneers 5-3 in Game 2. Transylvania is receiving votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA D-III poll.

COACH TONY HOLLOWAY'S COMMENTS

• If you look at the Game 1 box score, it shouldn't have been a 12-2 game. Transylvania has eight hits and we had six. The big things were we had some free passes on our walks and we made three critical errors. You can't give a team like Transylvania any extra outs or extra at bats. They are going to score more times than not.
• I was happy to be able to start Hannah Merkel off a pitch count in Game 2. Prior to [Sunday[, she had not pitched more than three innings in an appearance. She threw really well.
• We got eight hits in Game 2 and made the most of those hits by putting five runs on the board.
• It's not time for us to celebrate like we just won the World Series. We've taken a big step forward, but now we need to answer this by going and competing at Bluffton on Wednesday.
