Panthers Secure HCLC Win against Ravens in Season Finale
April 27, 2019
Hanover College secured a Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) victory against the Anderson University women's lacrosse team with a 20-2 win on Saturday at Hanover.
The Ravens closed out their inaugural season with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-4 record in HCLC play. Anderson finished fifth place in the seven-team HCLC despite playing most of the season's matches with one or two less players.
"[Saturday] was a bittersweet ending to a memorable season that almost never got started in the first place," Coach Colin McSharar said. "Late January, we were a week away from pulling the plug due to a such a small roster, but we set attainable and measurable goals back in January and exceeded most of them. We got better each passing game and it showed. We averaged seven goals a game in the ten games we played, a stat that seems unfathomable with a shorthanded team and a lot of brand-new players. On paper, there's no way we 'should have' finished fifth of 7 HCLC teams."
Senior CJ Pinyot (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) recorded a goal and an assist in her final career match with the Ravens.
"I'm really happy that CJ scored a goal in her final game. She's really had to endure a lot this year physically and emotionally. I wish I could have a few more years with her on the team, but we're losing her to graduation. She's been here since day one of the program and I cannot thank her enough for what she's given us."
Mallory Housman (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) also found the back of the net for Anderson. Kaitlyn Lawson (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) won six draw controls. Kiaha Nicols collected six ground balls and Emily Albert (New Albany, Ind./Christian Academy of Indiana) picked up three ground balls.
Laurel Atchison tallied seven points on three goals and four assists for the Panthers. Kinna Laymon notched five points on four goals and an assist. Rachel Davis scored four points on two goals and two assists. Eme Edman provided three points on two goals and an assist. Anne Bredding contributed three points on a goal and two assists. Emma Boomershine and Sarah Todd produced two goals apiece. Meg Finn, Hannah Mundt and Dianet Sanchez-Vega each found the back of the net.
Mundt notched five caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Maria Cornacchione and Todd each picked up three ground balls.
Julia Long severed as Hanover's goalkeeper for the first 43 minutes, 58 seconds and saved three of the four shots she faced. Delaney Bemmer relieved the final 16:02. She saw six shots and came up with five saves.
Nichols recorded 11 saves on 31 shots.
Hanover outshot Anderson by a 38-17 margin.
The Panthers cleared 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) attempts while the Ravens finished 7-of-14 (50 percent) clears.
Anderson competed in Saturday's match with two less players, but fought through adversity in the same manner it has all season.
"What I am most proud of is this team's character. Several coaches have gone out of their way to text me after games praising how tough we are, how we all had the right attitude, and how we carried ourselves when we got hit."
Anderson closed out the season with 10 players on the roster. With Pinyot graduating, the Ravens will have nine players returning for the 2020 season before the arrival of the upcoming recruiting class. Anderson expects to utilize the positive culture from this year for further success next year.
"I annoyingly preached back in the Fall that culture is the most important aspect of a team. From fall through now, kids have come through and gone away. But these ten kids who remained with us are the exactly the kind of young women we need to keep improving at the exponential rate that we are. The foundation is deep. And this new class coming in has their work cut out for them. I'm already looking forward to the 2020 season."
