Anderson Charges Past Thomas More
April 24, 2019
The Anderson University women's lacrosse team charged past Thomas More College with a 13-3 victory during Wednesday's Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) matchup in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Anderson (2-7, 2-3) managed to overcome playing with two less players. Thomas More (1-10, 0-5) is nearing the end of its final season in the HCLC as Thomas More makes the move to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
"We played an overall amazing game," Coach Colin McSharar said. "We played two players short, which almost never works out well for the shorthanded team. But, we got a dominating win against the team that will give out scholarships next year when they join the NAIA. We scouted them well, had a game plan, and made sure this game was never in doubt. We won literally every stat category."
Samantha Huber (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian) powered to eight points with seven goals and an assist. The St. Louis native delivered three free-position goals.
"Samantha went off with seven goals."
Kaitlin Lawson celebrated her birthday with three goals of her own. Mallory Housman (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) scored four points on a goal and three assists. Hannah Planck (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) dished out two assists while CJ Pinyot (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) and Nadia Bentley (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) each netted goals. Housman also won five draw controls.
Kiaha Nichols (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) saved seven of the 10 shots she faced for the Ravens.
"Kiaha played awesome. She had a shutout going for the first 47 minutes of the game."
Jalee Connor, Katie Rice and Aleyna Heyman each notched goals for the Saints. Rice also caused five turnovers.
Thomas More's Kennedy Yurt faced 19 shots and came up with six saves.
"What I'm most proud of is how we kept our composure. As a first-year program, it's very easy to be chippy and chirpy. The other team did that; we did not. For that, I'm impressed and proud. We did not look like a first-year program out there. We're doing the right things here. We won this game because of our culture. [Wednesday] proves that it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
The Ravens take on Hanover College (6-8, 3-2) in HCLC action to close out the regular season on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Hanover.
