Anderson Captures Historic Win on Senior Night
April 10, 2019
The Anderson University women's lacrosse team captured the program's first-ever win with an 18-9 victory during Wednesday's Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) matchup at Macholtz Stadium.
The Ravens (1-6, 1-2) managed to charge past the Grizzlies (0-5, 0-2) despite having one less player.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way we played [on Wednesday]," Coach Colin McSharar acknowledged. "We won every team stat category and dominated for a full 60 minutes. We were clearing the ball well. We executed our game plan and adjusted to any change-up they made. You wouldn't believe it if you saw it that we were only our seventh game ever with mostly freshman."
CJ Pinyot (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) led the Ravens with seven goals. She was recognized for Senior Night before the game. Pinyot has netted 14 goals on the season in addition to picking up nine ground balls, causing five turnovers and winning two draw controls.
After Pinyot rattled off goals, Samantha Huber (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian) capitalized on Franklin's extra coverage of Pinyot. Huber tallied seven points on six goals and an assist.
"I'm happy for CJ. Not only was it her last game ever at home, but she went off for seven goals. She's had to play through a lot both physically and mentally this season. They started locking her off in the second half. That made way for Samantha to pick up several goals."
McSharar took the reigns as head coach at Anderson for the inaugural 2019 season after coaching the Grizzlies, dating back to their inaugural season in 2015. Prior to the 2019 season, McSharar spent the last two seasons as the head coach and the two years prior as an assistant.
"This game has been starred on my schedule for a few years now. I was an assistant at Franklin once they went from club to varsity in 2015. Then for the 2017 season, I was their head coach. I left there to come here. It means so much that our first ever program win was against my old employer."
Mallory Housman (Evansville, Ind./Memorial) contributed five points on one goal and four assists. Kaitlyn Lawson (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) notched three goals. Nadia Bentley (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) produced a goal and Hannah Planck (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) dished out an assist. Huber recorded six ground balls while Planck, Housman and Bentley each collected four ground balls. Housman, Lawson and Huber won six draw controls apiece. Pinyot and Huber both scored on two free-position attempts.
Haley Ash paced Franklin with three goals. Brooke Hughes turned in three points on a goal and two assists. Shelby Hunter scored two goals. Abbey Voss, Peytan Mills and Kendall Hovis each added goals.
Kiaha Nichols (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) saved 12 of the 21 shots she faced for the Ravens.
Franklin's Courtney Jones saw 32 shots and came up with 14 saves.
The Ravens outshot the Grizzlies 44-31 and held a 32-21 advantage in shots on goal.
Anderson cleared 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) attempts while Franklin finished 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) clears.
The Ravens held a 20-8 advantage in draw controls and a 28-17 advantage in ground balls.
Franklin committed 27 turnovers while Anderson turned the ball over 24 times.
Both teams committed 30 fouls.
Ash and Mills scored the first two goals of the game. Pinyot netted the next two goals to tie the game at 2-all. Franklin regained the lead with a goal from Voss. Anderson pulled away from Franklin by scoring the next six goals to take an 8-3 lead. The Ravens lead 8-5 at halftime and outscored the Grizzlies 10-4 in the second half.
Anderson clashes with Mount St. Joseph University (2-6, 1-1) in HCLC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Cincinnati.
"This upcoming game on Saturday is also a big game for me. I graduated from Mount St. Joseph in 2011 and was there helping their women's team get off the ground when I was a student-athlete. If we play like we did [on Wednesday], even shorthanded again, we'll be just fine."
