Transylvania Charges Past Anderson
April 2, 2019
Transylvania University charged past the Anderson University women's lacrosse team with a 21-1 victory during Tuesday's Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) at Macholtz Stadium.
The Pioneers (8-3, 1-0) advanced to the Second Round of last year's NCAA Tournament after winning the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) championship and compiling an 18-2 record.
"I'm very proud of how we played [on Tuesday]," Coach Colin McSharar said. "We played a team that has been perennially in the conference championship game even going back to when the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) joined with the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) to make the ORLC. We forced long possessions and hustled for a full 60 minutes."
The Ravens (0-5, 0-1) came into the match facing the challenge of playing with two less players. Transylvania took advantage by limiting Anderson to 4-of-20 (20 percent) on clearing attempts. The Pioneers completed each of its five clearing attempts.
"We have been playing a man down all year, but [on Tuesday], we were two players down. One was due to injury and the other was a no-show. It's almost impossible to clear the ball when you have two less options to pass to/have two additional defenders to guard us."
CJ Pinyot (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) delivered a goal for the Ravens by creating the score on a hard spin move.
"Transylvania is 8-3. They've shut out one opponent so far and allowed one goal against in three games including ours. So, to even get on the scoreboard against a team like that is great and we did it two players short. That's pretty cool."
Nadia Bentley (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the Ravens with five ground balls.
Courtney Pontius contributed seven points on five goals and two assists for the Ravens. Salem Carlow recorded seven points on two goals and five assists. Hannah Fouts posted five points on four goals and an assist. Emma Oliver turned in five points on two goals and three assists. Alexis Rubin put together four points on two goals and two assists. Olivia Livingston and Lindsey Jenkins both provided a goal and an assist. Harper Zeitz and Lindy Walker netted goals while Madie Denman dished out an assist.
Zeitz recorded five ground balls and won six draw controls. Carlow earned six draw controls and picked up four ground balls.
Hayle Hall saved one of the two shots she faced for the Pioneers.
Anderson's Kiaha Nichols (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) saw 26 shots and tallied five saves.
Transylvania outshot Anderson by a 29-3 margin.
The Ravens committed five fouls while the Pioneers committed 11 fouls. Transylvania turned the ball over 22 times while Anderson turned the ball over 28 times.
"We knew it was going to be an uphill battle from the start, but this young team kept their composure, played hard, and learned a lot. There were a ton of positives. This was our best game of the year as far as discipline goes. We had no yellow cards and only committed five fouls. We had our second-lowest turnover game of the year."
Anderson battles Earlham College (7-4, 1-0) in an HCLC matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Macholtz Stadium.
"This team is poised to win a few games this year. We need to tighten up a few things. We've yet to peak this year and it'll be exciting when we do."
