Macholtz Stadium is entering a defining moment in its nearly 50-year history as Anderson University begins construction on long-awaited upgrades that will shape the future of Raven athletics. With a generous restricted gift from a faithful donor couple, AU now has the green light to launch Phase I of the renovation plan, signaling a new era for a facility that has supported generations of student-athletes since 1977.
This restricted gift, designated solely for Macholtz Stadium, honors the donors’ intent and moves the project forward. Their generosity allows AU to begin work on renovations that reflect a renewed commitment to the student-athlete experience and the role athletics plays in building community on campus.
Honoring a Legacy That Spans Nearly 50 Years
For decades, Macholtz Stadium has been home to AU football, track and field, additional sports, intramurals, and visiting summer camps. It has served as a place where students learned discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The stadium’s renewal represents more than a construction update. The mission is rising in a new way through this investment in the students who will compete, cheer, coach, and grow within its gates.
What Phase I Will Deliver
Phase I of the renovation focuses on foundational improvements designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and functionality. Features include:
- Right-sized seating for home and visiting fans
- Wheelchair-accessible seating
- A modern, appropriately sized press box
Anderson University will work with the contracted partners to determine dates this spring to break ground; however, demolition and removal of the old stands have begun. The goal is to host home competitions in the updated facility this fall.
“These renovations will provide our student-athletes and supporters with a championship-level experience,” says Head Football Coach Jonathan Coddington ’14. “Macholtz Stadium has a rich legacy, and this project allows the next generation of Ravens to have facilities and a gameday experience that reflects the pride, history, and heart of Anderson University and its football program. We are very thankful to each person who supported this project to make these renovations possible. We look forward to giving our student-athletes the best experience possible, and helping them develop on and off the field for years to come.”
A Sign of Momentum for AU
President Scott Moats sees the gift as a meaningful sign of confidence in the university’s mission and future. “This gift is a deeply encouraging sign of confidence in the direction of Anderson University,” he says. “Renovating Macholtz Stadium is not simply about a facility. It is about building community, strengthening our campus culture, and honoring the legacy of those who have shaped AU athletics.”
A Donor’s Deep Connection to AU
This phase of the Macholtz Stadium renovation is made possible by multiple alumni who deeply believe in Anderson University’s mission. Two of the leading donors are a married couple, Jeff Evrard ’81 and Lita Evrard ’82. Jeff, CEO of Summit Companies, speaks openly about the impact AU has had on his life and leadership. “I was blessed to play with a team of talented players, that at one time were ranked second in the nation. AU was a special place; we were both honored to receive an education that was second to none! Today, utilizing our education and for me, learning leadership skills as a captain and all-American with the Ravens, we have now built a successful business with Summit Companies, a leader in the fire life safety industry, with over 5,300 of our own team members. For these reasons and getting to know President Scott Moats and his wife Sheryl, Lita and I are honored to support the Macholtz Stadium project and other AU projects in a significant way,” Jeff said.
“Sports, overall, and especially football, build character, leadership skills, and an understanding that teamwork leads to success!” – Jeff Evrard
Another couple providing major contributions to the stadium is Dr. Carl Hicks ’81 and Liz Hicks ’80, whose generosity funded the installation of new turf in 2023 and made additional large gifts toward this next phase. The Hicks’ commitment to enhancing AU’s athletic facilities reflects both gratitude for their student experience and a desire to strengthen opportunities for future Ravens.
Years in the Making
This moment follows several years of planning, problem-solving, and unwavering commitment. AU installed new field turf in 2023 as the first step toward broader improvements, knowing that a comprehensive stadium renovation would require both vision and stewardship. As construction estimates for various stadium build options were received, it became clear that their sticker prices did not align with AU’s long-term affordability goals, including its work to address the cost of attendance and its aim to launch a tuition freeze for current and incoming students.
Rather than step back, the university pursued solutions that protected its mission while still advancing its athletic facilities. Through that process, AU identified a sustainable, cost-effective partnership with Bleacher Builders, securing durable, high-quality seating and functional upgrades without compromising its commitment to students or its future. Today’s progress is a testament to perseverance and responsible action. AU rose to meet the challenge.
Looking Ahead to Phase II
While Phase I is fully funded by this recent restricted gift, AU continues to raise funds for additional essential enhancements, including renovating and branding the building already standing beneath the current stadium. Improvements include:
- Upgrading restrooms on the north and south ends of the stadium
- Improving the concessions area on the south end
- Creating storage space for football and outdoor equipment
These features remain key to completing the full vision for Macholtz Stadium. The university welcomes continued support from alumni, families, and friends who want to help bring this project to completion.
A Facility That Serves the Next Generation
With more than 40% of AU students participating in athletics, this investment will have a meaningful impact across campus. The renovations are a significant milestone in the Launch AU fundraising campaign, and these resources bring excellence to athletics and contribute to a vibrant, Christ-centered student experience.
“Preparing for the future means preparing the spaces where our students learn, lead, and grow,” President Moats says. “We are grateful for every person who stands with us in this work.”
Rising Together
Construction will soon bring visible progress to Macholtz Stadium, marking a significant step toward welcoming the Raven community home this fall. With gratitude for the donors who have stepped forward and excitement for those who will join the effort, AU enters a new chapter with confidence.
Macholtz Stadium is rising. And so is AU.
